Natural Sunscreen & Self Tanning

Natural sunscreen versus chemical sunscreen - which should you choose? What about tanning products? How safe are they?

Natural Sunscreen & Organic Tanning Products

Protecting your skin from damage caused by the Sun’s harmful rays is vitally important but some ingredients in chemical sunscreens can cause irritation, allergies, hormone disruption and more. Other chemical sunscreen ingredients are unable to withstand powerful UV radiation without losing their effectiveness and some can even form potentially harmful breakdown products, like free radicals, when exposed to sunlight. The irony, right? Read More

Chemical-based sunscreens work by absorbing UV radiation before it can penetrate deeply into the skin and cause damage. They often contain ingredients known as ‘penetration enhancers’ which help the product adhere to the skin, however, this results in the chemicals themselves being absorbed into the body where they have been detected in blood, breast milk and urine samples, according to the Environmental Working Group’s cosmetic safety database.

Natural sunscreens (also known as physical sunscreens) contain mineral filters like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients are designed to sit on the skin’s surface and act like a physical barrier which deflects the Sun’s harsh rays. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in sunscreen formulas can leave a white layer (cast) on the skin but, when these ingredients are reduced to nanoparticles, they become invisible while still providing broad-spectrum protection. That's why nanoparticles in sunscreen are so popular. But there are safety concerns that nanoparticles might be absorbed into viable cells below the skin’s surface, risking damage to these cells. According to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the potential for nanoparticles in sunscreens to cause adverse effects depends primarily upon the ability of the nanoparticles to reach viable skin cells. The TGA also states that, to date, the current weight of evidence indicates the particles remain on the surface of the skin and in the outer dead layer of the skin but the debate continues. In Australia, sunscreen manufacturers are not required to state particle size on their products.

At Naturally Safe Cosmetics, we prefer to err on the side of caution when it comes to nanoparticles, so we only stock nanoparticle-free sunscreen. But that doesn't mean you have to look like a ghost. Ethical Zinc Natural Clear Zinc Sunscreen rubs in clear, as does Natural Instinct Invisible Natural Sunscreen. another option is to choose a tinted sunscreen like Natural Instinct Tinted Face Natural Sunscreen
