Why Zoya is the Healthy Colour of Fashion

Posted by Naturally Safe Cosmetics on 16th Jan 2016

At Naturally Safe Cosmetics, we love our nail polish. After all, it’s such a fun, easy way to add a little colour and glamour to your hands or your toe nails.

The downside to nail polish is that some of the most popular commercial brands are formulated with potentially harmful ingredients. That’s why, for many years, we’ve chosen to stock Zoya Nail Polish – a brand that has led the way with innovative product formulations and a pro-active approach to developing quality, toxin-free products.

Zoya Nail Polish is the original toxin free nail polish – meaning it is free from the most toxic ingredients normally found in nail polish, like toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, dibutyl phthalate, camphor and more. These ingredients can potentially adversely affect our respiratory, immune and endocrine (hormonal) systems. They can also cause allergies and formaldehyde is classified as a carcinogen.

Zoya was founded in 1986 by Zoya Reyzis, an aesthetician and salon owner, while she was pregnant. Zoya knew that most nail polishes on the market were full of toxins that can be inhaled and absorbed every time you paint your nails. Her husband, Michael, was a Chemist and knew the risks that ingredients like toluene and dibutyl phthalate could have on unborn babies. Together, Zoya and her husband created a spa focusing on natural nails, skin care and alternative European herbal brands. The Zoya brand of nail polish came about after Michael created the first working, fast drying, topcoat and the longest wearing, toxin-free, natural nail polish.

When Zoya Nail Polish hit the market, it totally revolutionised the industry and has continued to go from strength to strength over the years. It has been awarded as the longest wearing natural nail polish by an independent panel in Women’s Health Magazine.

Recent findings regarding nail polish . . .

In October 2015, news broke that a study by researchers at the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Duke University found evidence of a suspected endocrine-disrupting chemical widely used in popular nail polishes in the bodies of more than two dozen women who participated in a biomonitoring study.

The study found that all women had a metabolite of triphenyl phosphate, or TPHP, in their bodies just 10 to 14 hours after painting their nails. Their levels of diphenyl phosphate or DPHP, which forms when the body metabolizes TPHP, had increased by nearly sevenfold. A senior scientist at EWG and co-author of the study noted that it is “very troubling that nail polish being marketed to women and teenage girls contains a suspected endocrine disruptor” and it is “even more troubling to learn that their bodies absorb this chemical relatively quickly after they apply a coat of polish”.

This is of concern for all women but pregnant women should take particular care as chemicals in nail polish can adversely affect a growing foetus. In addition, teens, tweens and younger girls are being exposed to suspected hormone-disrupting chemical at a time when the bodies are rapidly developing and entering puberty.

Interestingly, the study found that even some nail polish brands marketed as more ‘natural’ were found to contain triphenyl phosphate in testing carried out by the EWG.

On a brighter note . . . .

The good news is, there is an alternative! At Naturally Safe, we’re happy to note that Zoya Nail Polish is free from triphenyl phosphate, in addition to the other ingredients mentioned above.

The Zoya range also includes treatments and preparation products like Zoya Anchor BasecoatZoya Armor Topcoat/UV Block and  Zoya Get Even Ridge Filling Basecoat.

Of course, with over 300 colour choices in the range, we can’t possibly stock all of Zoya’s fabulous nail polishes, so we’ve chosen a selection of popular colours that we know our customers will adore. Please let us know if there is a particular Zoya colour you would like added to our shelves.

So if you, like us, love your nail polish, then the choice really is Zoya – naturally!

About nail salons . . .

If you're in the habit of getting a manicure and nail colour at a nail salon, you need to be aware that many salons still use nail polish and related products that contain potentially harmful chemicals. We've know this for years, along with the fact that nail salon workers are exposed to chemicals that are linked to birth defects, respiratory problems and cancer. It has now been revealed by researchers that manicure lamps used to dry nails emit UV rays that can lead to skin cancer. See the Facebook video link below for more details:
