The skincare benefits of Gua Sha

Posted by Naturally Safe Cosmetics on 14th Nov 2023

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to improve circulation and reduce inflammation. It has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments, including pain, headaches and muscle tension.

In recent years, gua sha has also become popular as a skincare treatment, with claims it can help to:

  • reduce puffiness and inflammation by helping to drain excess fluids from the face - this can be especially beneficial for people who have dark circles or ‘bags’ under their eyes
  • promote collagen production which can help to improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • lift and tone the skin by increasing blood flow and stimulating the muscles of the face
  • improve the overall complexion by removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover
  • Improve penetration and absorption of skincare including serums, oils and moisturisers

There is some scientific evidence to support the claims that gua sha can benefit the skin. A small study published in the journal Dermatology and Therapy found that gua sha was effective in reducing facial puffiness.

Gua sha is performed using a gua sha too. The best gua sha tools are made from high quality, natural and semi-precious stones, like green jade rose quartz.

Gua sha is generally considered to be safe for most people, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • use a gentle touch: don’t apply too much pressure, as this can cause bruising or irritation
  • use a smooth-edged tool: avoid using sharp-edged tools, as these can scratch the skin
  • apply a hydrating oil or moisturiser before using the gua sha tool: this helps the tool to glide smoothly over the skin and prevent irritation
  • avoid gua sha if you have any skin conditions: if you have any skin conditions, such as eczema or rosacea, it is best to check with your doctor before using the gua sha.

Wondering if gua sha is right for you? Do your own research before using a gua sha to determine if it is suitable for you. Also familiarise yourself with the correct technique to avoid any potential issues.
