Soapberries. You’ve probably heard of them but, like many people, you’re not sure what they’re all about. Not to worry. In this article, we’re going to help you uncover the secrets of soapberries and why they’re considered nature's hidden cleaning power.
What are soapberries?
In a world where eco-friendly cleaning products are gaining in popularity, soapberries are emerging as a natural, effective and versatile cleaning product. But, what exactly are soapberries?
Soapberries, also called soap nuts, come from the Sapindus Mukorossi tree – a deciduous tree found in the Himalayas. When combined with water, the berries release a gentle, yet effective, natural detergent called saponin. Saponin acts as a surfactant, breaking down and removing dirt, grime and even tough stains. Soapberries also have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties and are gentle on skin while being tough on dirt.

Soapberries vs. traditional cleaning products
There’s no doubt that many traditional cleaning products on the market get the job done. But at what cost to our health and the health of our planet? Unlike chemical-based cleaning products, soapberries are natural and gentle on our skin are also kind to our planet because they are biodegradable, meaning they break down easily in the environment without causing harm. This makes them an eco-friendly choice that helps reduce water pollution and carbon emissions. Soapberries are also a safe option for septic systems.
The versatility of soapberries
Soapberries are multi-purpose as they can be used for various cleaning tasks. This eliminates the need for purchasing multiple cleaning products, thus reducing clutter and waste in your home. With soapberries, you can wash your laundry, clean your dishes and even tackle tough stains on surfaces like countertops or floors. This versatility makes soapberries a convenient and efficient cleaning solution.
The sustainability of soapberries
While soapberries have been used for centuries in regions like India and Nepal, they are making waves in sustainability circles, offering a natural alternative to conventional and chemically-laden detergents.
Switching to soapberries for your cleaning needs allows you to cut down on the number of single-use plastic bottles and containers you buy. We all know that single-use plastics are a major contributor to plastic pollution. Because soapberries are re-usable and long-lasting, you don’t need to buy them as often and, even when you do, they are typically sold in biodegradable packaging or even bulk options, reducing waste and environmental impact.
Soapberries in the laundry
Many laundry products contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to both the environment and human health. These chemicals can cause skin irritations and respiratory problems and can even contribute to indoor air pollution. Soapberries, on the other hand, are completely natural and non-toxic, making them a safer choice for your home and the planet.
Soapberries are also gentle on fabrics. Unlike harsh detergents that can cause fading, soapberries help to preserve the colours and integrity of your clothes. They can be used on all types of fabrics, including delicate fabrics like silk or wool.
Using soapberries for laundry is simple and straightforward. Start by placing 4-6 soapberries in a small cotton bag (these bags are often included when you buy the soapberries). Tie the bag securely to prevent any berries from escaping during the wash cycle, making sure the soapberries have enough space to move around freely. Place the soapberry bag directly in the washing machine drum along with your clothes. If you prefer a scented laundry, you can add a few drops of essential oil to the wash (my personal favourite is Lavender). Select your desired water temperature and cycle, and let the washing machine do its work. The saponin in the soapberries will naturally foam and cleanse your clothes, leaving them fresh and clean. Once the cycle is complete, remove the soapberry bag and allow it to dry for future use. Economical soapberries can be re-used multiple times.
How to use soapberries for household cleaning
Soapberries can be used to make a multi-purpose cleaner for various household cleaning tasks. To create a cleaning solution, simply soak a handful of soapberries in warm water for 5-10 minutes. The saponin will be released into the water, creating a mild detergent.
For general surface cleaning, dip a cloth or sponge into the soapberry solution and wipe down countertops, tables and other surfaces. The natural antibacterial properties of soapberries will help eliminate germs and leave your surfaces clean and fresh.
For tougher stains or dirt, you can create a paste by mixing your soapberry solution with baking soda. Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing with a brush or sponge. Rinse with water and repeat, if necessary.
Soapberries can also be used to clean windows and mirrors. Simply spray the soapberry solution onto the glass surface and wipe clean with a lint-free cloth or newspaper for a streak-free shine.
Soapberries for personal care and beauty
Some people also use soapberries in their personal care and beauty routines. Soapberry extract or powder can be added to homemade shampoo, body wash, or facial cleansers. The natural saponin in soapberries acts as a gentle cleanser, effectively removing dirt and excess oil from the skin and hair.
Soapberries have also been used as a natural remedy for various skin conditions. The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of soapberries can help soothe irritations, reduce itching and promote overall skin health.
For a relaxing and aromatic bath, add a handful of soapberries to a muslin bag and place it in the bathwater. The saponin released from the berries will create a gentle foam, cleansing your skin and leaving it feeling soft and nourished.
What about your hip pocket?
Soapberries can also be friendly on your hip pocket because of their cost-effectiveness. A small bag of soapberries can last for multiple loads of laundry or cleaning tasks. This makes them a budget-friendly option in the long run, especially when compared to buying multiple bottles of chemical-based cleaners.
Buying soapberries
Soapberries can be found in various forms, including whole berries, powder, or liquid extract. When purchasing soapberries, look for organic and sustainably sourced options to ensure the highest quality and minimal environmental impact.
To store soapberries, keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This will help prolong their shelf life and maintain their cleaning properties. If properly stored, soapberries can last for up to a year or more.

A side note: my experience with skin rashes caused by chemical laundry products
Some ingredients in laundry products can cause skin irritations and rashes. I’ve had first-hand experience in this scenario. My husband asked if we could start using a laundry sanitiser. Apparently his clothes were a little smelly (mine and the kids' were not). I was already using a natural laundry detergent but I started using a big brand laundry sanitiser as well. All was fine for while, until I developed a rash on my body. At first I just used moisturiser to soothe the skin. Within a week or so, however, the rash became so severe, it was red raw (almost like a chemical burn) and nothing I tried at that point helped. I saw a dermatologist and was told it was granular parakeratosis , most likely caused by a common ingredient in laundry sanitisers – Benzalkonium Chloride. This antibacterial ingredient is a known irritant and is used in laundry santisers to kill germs and remove odours. It is also found in other personal care items, like eye drops and nasal spray, where it is used as a preservative. My rash was so bad it required the application of a topical steroid cream. As it healed, my skin was coming off in sheets! After that horrible experience, I stopped using laundry santisers. It's natural laundry products all the way for me.
