Rule No. 1 - Start with a clean and moisturised face
Before you start your makeup look, it’s super important to cleanse and moisturise your face.
- Wash your face with your chosen cleanser, preferably one that's tailored to match your skin type. Follow your cleanser with a toner - if you're using one. (A toner can help tighten pores, balance your skin's pH levels and boost hydration and, when applied with a cotton ball or pad, can help to remove any last traces of dirt and grime.)
- Finally, finish up with a moisturiser that deeply hydrates the skin and helps create a smooth base for makeup products. Instead of a moisturiser, you can apply a BB Cream or a dedicated makeup primer. Or, if you have very dry skin (like me), you can apply the BB Cream or primer over your moisturiser.
Rule No. 2 - Build a flawless base: create an even skin tone with foundation, concealer and setting powder
Once the skin prep is done, it's time to create your base. A flawless base is essential to any makeup look.
- Start by choosing the right foundation and shade for your skin type, whether it be a liquid foundation or powder foundation. Apply the foundation using a brush (for powder) or your fingers or a beauty blender for liquid.
- Use a concealer to cover blemishes, imperfections, redness, pigmentation or dark circles under the eyes to create an even skin tone. Some people prefer to use a concealer before their foundation, while others prefer to apply it after. It's a personal choice but, either way, be sure to blend the two together.
- Finally, set everything in place and improve your makeup's staying power with a light dusting of setting powder.
Rule No. 3 - Add a pop of colour & dimension to your look
A natural makeup look doesn't have to mean no colour. In fact, adding some color will brighten up your face and enhance your overall appearance. Choose neutral colours for both your blush and eyeshadow to give a natural flush of colour and a soft nude lipstick or lightly tinted lip balm for your lips.
- Try applying a soft pink/peach blush on the apples of your cheeks for an effortless glow. Or, for a truly luminous effect, go with an illuminisor.
- For the eyes, apply a light coloured eyeshadow as a base shade all over and then add dimension with a medium-toned eyeshadow like brown or taupe to fill in the creases of your lids. If you want a little more definition, you can add a little eyeliner to the outside corners of your eyes with a soft brown pencil. If you have sparse eyebrows, you can fill them in with a brow pencil. Finish off by applying a coat of mascara to your lashes - once again, brown mascara tends to give a softer look than black. (When it comes to the eyes, save the dark shadow colours, black eyeliner and extra layers of mascara for evening wear or special occasions.)
- A nude-coloured lipstick is ideal for a natural look. You could also opt for a tinted lip balm or lip gloss
There you have it - 3 simple rules you can follow each day for a fresh and natural makeup look.
