The Benefits of Vitamin C in Skincare

Posted by Angela - Naturally Safe Cosmetics on 1st Jan 2020

In this article, we take a look at the benefits of Vitamin C as in ingredient in organic skincare.

Firstly, what is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is an organic compound that’s water soluble. We all know that Vitamin C is a vital nutrient for health but our bodies don’t produce or store Vitamin C, so we need to get a daily intake from our diet (from fruits and vegetables) or dietary supplements. Vitamin C is also known as L-ascorbic acid, ascorbic acid or L-ascorbate.1

Vitamin C has many proven benefits thanks to its powerful antioxidant properties. Vitamin C is believed to help reduce the risk of chronic diseases (like high blood pressure and gout, for example), prevent iron deficiencies by improving iron absorption and boost immunity.2

Free radicals and antioxidants

Environmental factors, such as UV radiation, pollution and smoking, can cause damage to our skin through the generation of ‘oxidative stress’ – an inbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in your body.

Free radicals are oxygen-containing molecules with an uneven number of electrons. They are generated by our bodies when converting food to energy, extracted from food or breathed in from the air. They are also generated by the sunlight’s action on the skin. Free radicals can cause harmful reactions in your body.3

Antioxidants are molecules that can donate an electron to a free radical without making themselves unstable, causing the free radical to stabilise and become less reactive.2

What about topical Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a popular ingredient in many skincare products because, when it is manufactured into a stable topical formulation, it is proven to be effective in protecting against photoageing of the skin.4

In particular, Vitamin C can help:

  • stimulate collagen production
  • neutralise free radicals before they cause skin damage.
  • reduce the visible signs of ageing, including fine lines and wrinkles
  • diminish the appearance of skin discolouration and dark spots
  • promote a brighter, more even complexion
